Blessed Are TheyMatthew 5:9

The One Who Keeps the Peace Is Called Weak

This message is for the man who has spent three years carrying messages between two halves of a family that will not sit at the same table, and who overheard his own cousin call him spineless for it at a wedding last month

It was at the wedding, in the gap between the meal and the dancing, when he had gone back for the coats.

Two of them were by the tables and they did not know he was behind the screen, and one of them said his name, and the other one said: "He is not keeping the peace. He is spineless. There is a difference."

They moved off. He stood there with three coats over his arm for what felt like a while.

Three years. Three years of it. The split happened over the house, which was really about something else, which was really about something that happened in nineteen ninety four that nobody will say out loud. And since then he has been the one who goes to both. He is at his aunt's on the Friday and at his uncle's on the Saturday and he does not repeat anything from one to the other, which sounds simple and is the hardest thing he has ever done, because both of them fish for it and both of them are hurt when he does not bite.

He carries the invitations. He tells one side that the other side asked after the baby, which is usually true and sometimes he stretches it. He has swallowed things said about people he loves so many times that he has developed a way of nodding that means nothing at all.

And a man he grew up with, at a wedding, thinks he is a coward.

The worst part is that he stood there behind the screen and could not immediately think of the argument against it.

If you are the one in the middle, you know that screen. You know the coats over the arm. And you know the sentence that arrives afterwards and moves in: maybe I am not being faithful, maybe I am just frightened of everybody, and I have been calling it something nicer for three years.

The One Who Keeps the Peace Is Called Weak

The word He used, and where He put it

Let me say the low thing first, in the room where it actually lives, because you have been carrying it since the wedding.

The accusation is not that you failed. The accusation is that your virtue is a costume. That the thing you have called peacemaking is fear with better manners, and that everyone can see it except you. That lands harder than being called wrong, because there is no way to disprove it from the inside.

So let us go to the sentence Jesus actually said, and notice that He said it about a job nobody thanks anyone for.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.Matthew 5:9

First, what the word blessed is doing there. It is not saying peacemakers have an easier time. It is not a description of how the wedding went. Blessed here means what it means everywhere in the Bible: God's favor resting on a person, His face turned toward them. Jesus is standing on a hillside pointing at categories of people and saying, out loud, that God is toward these ones. It is a statement about His face, not a report on their circumstances.

That matters, because your circumstances are three coats and a courtyard and a name said behind a screen.

You are one of the people Jesus stood up and named, and He named you by what you do rather than by what it costs you. Matthew 5:9 puts the blessing on the peacemakers with no conditions attached about how well it is going, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a sentence spoken on a hill and lays it on a specific man holding somebody else's coats.

And notice the reward clause, because it is not vague. They shall be called the children of God. Called by whom? Not by the family. Not by the man behind the screen. Called by God, which is the only naming in the room that is not an opinion.

Peacemaking is not peace keeping, and the difference is work

Now let me deal with the accusation properly, because it deserves better than reassurance.

There is a real thing called being spineless and it does exist. It looks like agreeing with whoever is in the room. It looks like letting a lie stand because contradicting it would be uncomfortable. It looks like going along with cruelty because you want the evening to be pleasant.

That is not what you have been doing. You have been going to both houses, which is the opposite of choosing whoever is in front of you. You have been refusing to carry the ammunition, which costs you something every single time and buys you nothing. You have been swallowing things about people you love, which is not agreement, it is a decision not to escalate.

Peace keeping avoids the trouble. Peacemaking absorbs it. And absorbing is expensive, which is why it looks like nothing from the outside: the whole point is that the thing you took never went anywhere else.

You have been paying for three years and nobody has seen the receipt, and God has been watching the whole transaction. Scripture calls the peacemakers blessed rather than the peace likers, and it is the same Spirit who is named as the one producing peace as fruit in a person, which means the peace in that courtyard was not manufactured by you gritting your teeth.

I want to be careful about one thing, though, because this can be misused and it does damage. Peacemaking never means covering something that must not be covered. If somebody in that family is being harmed, or frightened, or made unsafe, the peacemaking thing is to say it out loud to a person who can act, today. That is not breaking the peace. Concealment is not peace, and it never was. Jesus was not describing a man who keeps quiet about damage.

Everything below that line is the ordinary long grind of pride and old grievance, and that is exactly what you have been standing in.

Why the reward is a family resemblance

Here is the part I most want you to have, and it is in the second half of the verse.

Jesus does not say the peacemakers get thanked. He does not say the family notices. He says they shall be called the children of God, and the reason that is the reward is that peacemaking is the family trade.

God is the one who made peace when the two sides were not going to reconcile on their own. Paul says it plainly: God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto Himself. He did not stand between the parties passing messages and hoping. He absorbed the cost of the distance in Himself and then held out His hands to both.

So when a man goes to his aunt on the Friday and his uncle on the Saturday and carries nothing between them but the good part, he is not being weak. He is doing, on a family scale, the thing God did on a cosmic one. Of course he gets called the child of God. He looks like Him.

You are showing a family resemblance to God in that courtyard, and the resemblance is the reason for the name. Matthew 5:9 links the making of peace directly to being called His child, and it is His Spirit who is called the Spirit of adoption, so the name you are given there is not a compliment, it is a status.

And I am not going to tell you the family gets fixed. I do not know that, and after three years you have had enough of confident people. Nobody can promise what nineteen ninety four does next. What is written is what God calls you while you are standing in it.

You have been named by the only voice in that family whose naming is final, and it was done before the wedding and it stands after it. The written word gives the title on the hillside without waiting to see the outcome, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a title into something a man can feel behind a screen with coats on his arm.

The breakthrough

So here is what I want to put in your hands, in the gap between the meal and the dancing.

You are not spineless. And I do not say that to comfort you, I say it because the sentence Jesus said has already ruled on it and His ruling outranks a man by the tables. Spinelessness agrees with whoever is present. You have been refusing to, in both houses, for three years, at real cost, and nobody has thanked you once.

You are blessed, in that courtyard, with the coats over your arm and your name being said behind a screen, and blessed means God's face is toward you there. Matthew 5:9 puts the word on the peacemakers as a class and does not attach a single condition about recognition, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a hillside sentence and sets it down beside a man at a wedding.

Take the word. Not the courtyard's version. His. Say it over the three years you have actually had, the Friday and the Saturday, the nodding that means nothing, the things you have swallowed about people you love, and mean by it what Jesus meant: God is toward me here, and He calls me His.

You have a name given by God on the strength of what you have been doing quietly, and the wedding did not have the authority to revise it. The written word says they shall be called the children of God, which is a naming He does Himself, and His Spirit is the one who bears witness with your spirit that the name is real.

Declare this over yourself

Say this out loud, in the car or the courtyard. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the standing to be called what God calls you came with Him and not with the family's approval. Scripture is under every line of it and the Holy Spirit carries it, not the steadiness of your voice. What He does about the split, and about nineteen ninety four, is His to decide, in His own way and in His own time, and I am not going to guess it for you. Your part is to say it and mean it, and to speak to somebody who can act if anybody in that family is being harmed.

  1. Word spineless that I heard across a courtyard, you are one man's opinion and you are not my name. Matthew 5 says the peacemakers shall be called the children of God, and He is the one doing the calling.
  2. Suspicion that three years of this has been fear with better manners, get out, in the name of Jesus. It is written that peacemakers absorb rather than avoid, and I have paid at both houses every week and never once carried the ammunition.
  3. Father, You made peace when the two sides were never going to manage it, and You call me Your child for doing it on a smaller scale. I am going to my aunt's on Friday and my uncle's on Saturday, and I am carrying nothing but the good part.
