Blessed Are TheyLuke 6:21

The Reading She Was Given

This message is for the Sunday she is on the schedule to read aloud and the passage handed to her is blessed are you who weep now, three weeks after her mother's funeral, with the whole room listening

The schedule was drawn up in January, long before any of it, and her name is on it for today, and the steward hands her the sheet with the reading printed on it as she comes through the door, the way he has done a dozen times before, and says, "Luke six, from twenty. You'll be fine."

She does not look at it until she is sitting down. Two hundred people, a Sunday morning, the notices going on at the front, somebody's baby grizzling three rows back. She unfolds the sheet on her knee, and reads the first line, and her stomach drops through the chair.

Blessed are you who are poor. Three weeks since the funeral. Three weeks since the flat went quiet, the flat she cannot afford on her own, and the phone calls she is not returning. Blessed are you who are hungry now. She skipped breakfast because there was nothing she fancied and nothing she could face. Blessed are you who weep now. She has wept in the shower every morning for twenty one days so that nobody in the flat below hears her through the wall.

She has spent her whole adult life trying not to become the people on this list. That is the honest truth of it. She grew up hearing blessed said over people with new cars and answered prayers and photographs from abroad, and she has been quietly, decently, faithfully working to be one of them, and instead here she is, poor, hungry and weeping, with a sheet in her hand that says Jesus looked at people exactly like her and said blessed, and in four minutes she has to stand up in front of two hundred people and read it out loud.

She stands up. She walks to the lectern. She reads Blessed are you who are poor in a steady voice, and Blessed are you who are hungry now in a steady voice, and gets as far as Blessed are you who and cannot say the next word, because the next word is weep, and it is her.

You know that lectern. You have your own sheet, your own list of the things you have been trying not to be, and your own line you cannot get through, because it has your name in it. This is your Sunday. Stand there a minute.

The Reading She Was Given

Blessed does not mean what they told you it meant

Hear me, you at the lectern. Before we go one line further, I have to take a word off you and hand it back clean, because the whole of the ache is sitting on a wrong definition and I am not going to build anything on it.

Blessed does not mean comfortable. It does not mean the prayer got answered and the car is new and the photographs are from abroad. That is what the word came to mean in a lot of rooms, and I am not going to mock anybody who said it or believed it, because most of them said it with hope. But it is not what the word means in Jesus' mouth. In His mouth, blessed means the favor of God is resting on a person. Resting on them. Not paying them. Not fixing them. Resting on them, present tense, whatever their circumstances are doing. And He proved He meant it by the people He said it over.

Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.Luke 6:20-21

Read who is on the list. He did not gather the successful and say blessed. He lifted His eyes to a hillside of the poor and the hungry and the weeping and said it over them, to their faces, in the second person: blessed are you. Not they. You.

You are inside that sentence, right now, exactly as you are, and it was not a mistake. I am not speaking my thought over you; I am reading you the same sheet, from Luke's own written record, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a line off a page and puts a person's name into it. He did that on a hillside and He does it at a lectern.

Now let me name the pit, because I will not lift you out of a place I have not looked at honestly. The ache is not only the grief and the empty flat. It is the shame underneath: I worked so hard not to be one of these people, and I have become one anyway, and if He calls them blessed then either the word is empty or I have failed at the only thing I was trying to do. That is the weight. And I am not going to make it lighter by telling you your poverty is secretly wonderful, because it is not, and Jesus never said it was. He did not bless the poverty. He blessed the poor. There is a whole kingdom of difference in that, and it is where we are going.

He blessed the person and not the pit

Look at what the text actually says, because the guardrail here is that we quote it and we do not improve on it.

Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. The favor is on the person; the kingdom is theirs. He does not say the poverty is good. Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh. He does not say the weeping is good; He says the one who weeps has His favor resting on them and a laughter ahead that is His to give. He is not romancing your empty fridge. He is not telling you to go and find more grief so you can be more blessed; the woman in Luke 7 who wept at His feet was not asked to weep harder. You have the favor of God resting on you as a weeping person, not because you weep, and it is on you now. That is written. And it is His Spirit, whom Jesus called the Comforter, who rests it on the mourning, which is why the mourning are the ones He named.

Do you see what this does to the shame? You have been reading the list as a list of failures, the categories of person you must at all costs avoid becoming. Jesus read it as a list of the people He came to. The poor in spirit, the ones with nothing left in the tank. The mourning. The hungry. He did not say blessed are the people who have avoided all this. He looked straight at the ones who had not, and put His favor on them by name. You are not on the wrong list. You are on His. The word says so and the Spirit is the one making it feel less like an insult and more like an arm round your shoulders as you stand there.

And here is the part that lets me shout, because I have been quiet long enough. Nothing in this passage says your circumstances are about to change. Hear me, I am not going to promise you that, and neither did He, in this verse, on this morning. What He promised is stranger and better: the favor is on you now, in the middle of it, while the flat is too quiet and the shower is where you cry. Blessed is not the word for the day it gets better. Blessed is the word for you today, in the life you actually have, and He is the one who put it there. Scripture holds it and His Spirit carries it, and neither of them is waiting for your circumstances to catch up before it counts.

One more honesty, because the site owes it to you. Your hard year is not proof the favor went elsewhere. And it is not secretly the favor in disguise either; that is the more comfortable lie and I will not tell it. The loss is a loss. The favor is a favor. They are both true at once, and Jesus is the one who put them in the same sentence.

The breakthrough

So here is what I want to happen at the lectern, on the word you cannot say.

I want you to say it. Not bravely. Not with your voice steady. Just say the word weep, and then read the rest of the line, because the rest of the line is where He puts His favor, and it is on you. You have been named in a blessing by the mouth of Jesus, and He named you on purpose, and He is not going to take it back because you are the wrong sort of blessed. That is written in Luke. That is the Spirit's own work in the room, in you, as you stand there with the sheet shaking.

And hear this, because it turns the whole thing round. You have been trying not to become these people. But these people are the ones He came for and the ones He calls His own, and the favor of God is not a reward at the end of avoiding them; it is a hand on the shoulder of the ones who could not. You are not the failure at the lectern; you are the reader He wrote the line for, and Scripture said it first and His Spirit is saying it now.

I am not promising you the flat gets easier or the tears stop by Advent. I am telling you whose favor is on you this morning, and it is His, and it is resting, and it is not going anywhere.

Declare this over yourself

Say this at the lectern, or in the kitchen with the sheet on the table. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the standing to read your own name into His blessing was given to you by the One who said it first; you did not have to qualify by getting out of the list. Scripture is under every word, and the Holy Spirit carries the blessing from His mouth to your chest, not the steadiness of your voice. What He does with your circumstances is not mine to forecast; leave the outcome with Him, and take the favor, because it is already resting. Speak to the sheet, then to the shame, then to Him.

  1. Reading sheet in my hand, you have my name in you, and I say so in the name of Jesus. He lifted His eyes to the poor and the hungry and the weeping and said blessed to their faces, and mine is one of the faces.
  2. Shame that says this list is my failure, you have been reading it upside down, and I am turning it the right way. Jesus did not bless the pit, He blessed the person in it, and His favor is resting on me in the life I actually have.
  3. Lord, You said blessed over people who look like me, and You said it on purpose. I thank You, because Your favor is on me now and not after, and I am reading the next word out loud.
