The Ledger and the Reward

He keeps it in his head and he could produce it in about ninety seconds.

The promotion he did not take in two thousand and nine, because of what it would have done to the Sundays and because of a thing his manager had asked him to sign off. Nobody ever knew. He has never mentioned it and he is proud of that and he has also mentioned it to himself several thousand times.

The eleven years of Wednesday nights. The money over the years, which he will not itemize even privately because that feels like the wrong side of a line, but he knows the shape of it. The friendship that went quiet after he said the thing he had to say. The holidays not taken because of the camp. His daughter's opinion of him, which is complicated and which he suspects has some of this in it.

He is sitting in the study with the lamp on and the book open at the end of that famous list, and it says: great is your reward in heaven.

And what he hears, and he is ashamed of hearing it, is: a promissory note. Signed by somebody who is not in a hurry and is under no obligation to show his working.

He is fifty eight. He is not bitter. He would object strongly to the word bitter and he would be mostly right. But there is a tightness in him about this that he has never got to the bottom of, and it comes out sideways occasionally, and his wife has noticed it twice in a year and said nothing.

Great is your reward in heaven.

If you have ever kept a quiet account of what obedience has cost you, you know that study. And you know the sentence underneath: I am not asking to be paid, I would never say that, but I have noticed that I am keeping the receipts, and I do not know what that says about me.

Reward is not wages, and that is not a technicality

Let me sit across the desk and say the thing you have not said, because you would not say it and it needs saying.

The tightness is not greed. If somebody offered you the money back you would be offended. The tightness is that you have been holding two incompatible ideas for about thirty years and never put them side by side, and they have been grinding.

Idea one: I gave these things up freely, as a gift, wanting nothing. Idea two: I have an itemized list of them that I could produce in ninety seconds.

Both of those are in you and they cannot both be entirely true, and that is the grinding.

So let us look at the sentence.

Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.Matthew 5:12

And first, the word blessed that runs through the whole list this sentence closes. It is not a wage and it never was. Blessed means God's favor rests on that person, His face is turned toward them. Every line on that list describes a person God is looking at, not a person God is settling with.

Now the word reward. In the New Testament it is not the word for wages owed under contract. Jesus uses a different word for that when He talks about laborers being paid. The word here is closer to a thing given back, a return, and in the same sermon He uses it for what a person gets who prays in a room with the door shut. It is not an invoice being honored. It is a Father giving something to somebody in the family.

You have a Father giving rather than an employer settling, and those are two entirely different relationships with two entirely different paperwork. Matthew 5:12 speaks of a reward in heaven kept by God, and it is the Holy Spirit who is called the Spirit of adoption, which means the arrangement you are inside was never a contract in the first place.

Kept, not owed

Now the preposition, because it is the part that undoes the promissory note.

Great is your reward IN HEAVEN. Not: great will be your reward. Not: a reward is being calculated. It is in heaven, which is a location, which means it exists now, and it is being kept somewhere by somebody.

Peter says the same thing in different words: an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you. Reserved. Held. Under somebody's name.

A promissory note is a promise about the future from somebody who might not deliver. A thing kept in your name in a safe place is a fact about the present.

You have something already held under your own name, and holding is not the same as owing. Matthew 5:12 puts the reward in heaven as a present location, and it is the Holy Spirit whom Paul calls the earnest of the inheritance, a deposit already paid into a man, which is exactly what somebody does when the main thing is real.

And here is where it touches the ledger. A man who is owed keeps receipts, because receipts are what you produce when a debt is disputed. A man for whom something is being kept does not need receipts, because he is not the one doing the accounting and the accounting was never his job.

You were never the accountant, and the list in your head has been you doing somebody else's work for thirty years. Scripture says God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labor of love, which puts the remembering entirely on His side, and it is His Spirit who bears witness with your spirit that you are a son, which is the only status under which any of this makes sense.

What the ledger has actually been for

Let me say one more honest thing, because you would rather have it than be soothed.

The ledger is not really about payment. You know that. If God appeared in that study and offered to reimburse you, you would be horrified.

The ledger is about whether it was seen.

That is what a man does with the promotion he turned down that nobody knew about. He does not want the promotion back. He wants somebody to know it happened. And because nobody did, he has been keeping the record himself, for thirty years, in his own head, at some cost to his shoulders and occasionally to his wife.

And that is the thing the verse actually answers, and it answers it in one word, which is heaven. It was seen. All of it. Two thousand and nine was seen. The friendship was seen. Eleven years of Wednesdays was seen and counted by somebody who was in the room every time and never once needed telling.

You have been seen the entire time, which is the thing the ledger was really asking about. Matthew 5:12 locates the reward with God rather than with the people who never knew, and it is the Holy Spirit who searches all things and knows what is in a man, so the account you have been keeping was already kept and kept better.

I do not know what your daughter thinks or what she does with it, and I am not going to guess at that for you, because it is hers. What is written is where the record is held and who is holding it.
