Midnight in a Room With Eight Beds

Eight beds. Hers is the one by the radiator, which sounds like the good one and is not, because the radiator does a thing at about two.

Her bag is under her head. Not because anybody has taken anything. Because a woman on the third bed cries at night and a woman on the sixth talks in her sleep and there is a rhythm in this room that she has learned in eleven days and the bag under her head is part of how she sleeps at all.

She led worship for nine years.

Not big rooms. A church of about a hundred and forty, on a Sunday, and a Thursday evening thing that was maybe twenty people, which she liked better. She knew what she was doing. She could bring a room down to nothing and hold it there.

She cannot get a sound out.

That is the plain fact and it has been true since about the second week of all this, and it is not a decision. She has tried, twice, in the shower block at that place, and what came out was not singing.

Two people have said to her, in the last month, both of them meaning it kindly, that she should praise her way through this. One of them said it on the phone from a house with four bedrooms in it and did not hear herself say it.

It is about midnight.

If you have ever been told to praise your way through something by somebody sleeping in their own house, you know this ceiling. And you know the sentence underneath, which is not anger at them, it is worse: they are quoting a real verse at me and I cannot do it, so whatever those two men had, I do not have it.

The word, and then the hour

Let me sit on the end of that bed and say the plain thing.

The problem is not the shelter. The shelter is a roof and eleven days is eleven days and you are managing better than you think. The problem is that a verse has been handed to you as an instruction by people whose situation is not yours, and you cannot perform it, and so a passage of Scripture has quietly become a measurement of you.

So let me put the word straight first.

Blessed does not mean the housing works out. It means the favor of God is resting on a person, His face is turned toward them. It is a statement about where He is looking, and it does not read off an address.

Now the verse, and I want you to look at two things in it that nobody mentions.

And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.Acts 16:25

First: at midnight. Not on the first evening. They were thrown in after being beaten and put in the inner prison with their feet in stocks, and the singing happens at midnight, which means several hours had passed in that place before it started.

We do not know what those hours were. Luke does not tell us. He tells us what time it was when they sang, which is a strange detail to include unless the hour is part of the point.

Second: nothing had happened yet. The earthquake comes in the next verse, after the singing. When they started, they had no reason at all to think anything was about to change.

You are in the hours the passage does not describe, and those hours are in it whether or not Luke wrote them down. Acts 16:25 gives the time and not the interval, and it is the Holy Spirit who is the one Paul says helps our weakness because we do not know what to pray as we ought, which is a description of the hours before midnight rather than the moment after.

Two men, not one

Now the other thing about that verse, and it is the part that matters most in a room with eight beds.

There were two of them.

Paul and Silas. Nobody in that cell was doing it alone. And in a room where two people sing at midnight, either one of them could have been carrying the other for part of it, and Luke does not tell us which, and it does not matter, because that is what two people are for.

You have been trying to do at midnight, alone, with a bag under your head, in a room where a woman on the third bed is crying, what two men did together in a cell.

You were never designed to be the only voice in a room, and the passage everybody quotes at you has two people in it. Acts 16:25 names both of them, and it is the Holy Spirit who is described as being poured out on a gathered people rather than issued individually, which is why the singing in that cell was not a solo performance and was never meant to be.

And the other line in that verse. The prisoners heard them.

That is Luke telling us the singing was heard by people who were not singing. There is a whole cellblock of people in that story who did not sing at midnight and who are not criticized anywhere in the chapter, and one of the things that happens to them is that they hear it, and none of them leaves when the doors open.

You are one of the people who hears it, and there is no rebuke anywhere in that chapter for the ones who were listening rather than singing. The written word records the prisoners hearing without a word of judgment on them, and it is the Holy Spirit who does the work in a person who is receiving rather than producing.

About the two who told you to praise

Now let me be honest about them, because you are not angry at them and you should not have to be.

They are quoting a real thing. Praise in a hard place is real and it is powerful and this site is not going to say otherwise. What they did wrong is turn it into an instruction to somebody in a condition they were not in, and instruction is the wrong mode for that passage. Acts 16 is a report, not a command. Luke writes down what two men did. He does not tell anybody else to do it.

The difference matters enormously when a person cannot.

And I am not going to tell you the sound comes back. I think it probably does, because voices usually do, and I am not going to promise it, and I am certainly not going to tell you when. And I am not going to tell you the housing resolves. I have no idea.

And I will not tell you God put you in this room to teach you something. He did not. A housing situation and whatever went before it are not a curriculum.

You are favored and you are in a shelter, and neither of those is evidence about the other. Scripture puts the singing in a cell and the earthquake in the next verse without connecting them as cause and effect, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a person able to hold that without turning worship into a lever.

And keep going to whoever is helping you with the housing. Ring them back. Ask for the thing in writing. If anybody in that building frightens you, tell the staff that day, out loud.
