Glad For ThemMatthew 20:12-15

Twenty Years of Chairs and Someone Else's Name

This message is for the woman who has set out the chairs and made the tea for twenty years, listening to a newcomer of eighteen months thanked from the front by name, and discovering how much of her serving had a receipt attached to it

She stacks them eight to a cart because nine tips it, which is a thing she learned in about the second year and which she has told four people over two decades and none of them remembered.

The hall is emptying. Somebody has left a mug on the window ledge again.

It was a good service. It was the anniversary and there was a proper tea afterwards and there had been three people thanked from the front, and one of them was Helen, who has been here eighteen months, and who set up the thing on a Wednesday that has genuinely brought in about nine people, and who is lovely.

Twenty years.

Nobody has been unkind. That is not the story. She was not overlooked in any way anybody could point at. There is no list she was left off. It is simply that thanking somebody from the front is a thing that happens when a new thing starts and does not happen when an old thing continues.

And she stood at the back and clapped.

And then it arrived, on the way to the cart, and it was much worse than the disappointment. Because what arrived was not "I would have liked to be thanked". What arrived was: I have been keeping a receipt.

Twenty years of tea urns and chairs and the flowers on the second Sunday and being there at eight when nobody else is, and somewhere underneath it, without her ever once deciding to, an account had been running.

She has been sitting with that for about ten minutes and there is a stack of chairs half done.

If you have served a long time and found a bill in your own hand, you know that hall. And you know that the shame of finding it is heavier than the disappointment that uncovered it.

Twenty Years of Chairs and Someone Else's Name

The word, and then a question about money

Let me lean on the cart and say the plain thing, because the hall is empty and this is the only ten minutes you will get.

The problem is not Helen. You mean it when you say she is lovely and you clapped and you were not faking. The problem is what the clapping uncovered, which is that there has been an account running under twenty years of service that you did not authorize and cannot remember opening.

So let me put the word straight before anything else.

Blessed does not mean being thanked from the front. It means the favor of God is resting on a person, His face is turned toward them. It is about where He is looking, and it has never once been distributed at an anniversary service.

Now the parable, and I want you to notice that it is not really about the workers.

Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day. Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?Matthew 20:12-15

Read the two questions at the end and notice that they are both about ownership.

Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own. And: is thine eye evil because I am good.

The whole hinge of that parable is whose money it was. The men who worked all day were not underpaid. They got exactly what they agreed. Nothing was taken from them and given to somebody else, and the householder says so directly: friend, I do thee no wrong.

What has happened is that a gift given to somebody else has been read as a deduction from them, and it was not one, and it never could be, because it was not their money.

You have not been shorted, and what was given to Helen at the front did not come out of anything belonging to you. Matthew 20:13 has the householder say I do thee no wrong before he says anything else, and it is the Holy Spirit who is able to show a person the difference between a gift given elsewhere and a debt left unpaid.

Where the receipt came from

Now the receipt itself, because that is the actual thing on the cart and it deserves better than being told off.

Nobody decides to keep one. That is the first thing to say. It accumulates. Twenty years of eight o'clock on a Sunday and nobody knowing that nine chairs tips a cart, and it grows quietly, in the dark, without a single moment where a person chooses it.

And here is why it grows: because the work is genuinely unseen, and being unseen for a long time is a real weight, and a human being carrying a real weight will eventually look for a place to set it down. A receipt is a place to set it down. It says: this is recorded somewhere, even if only by me.

That is not wickedness. It is a person trying to make something invisible weigh correctly.

You started keeping a record because the work was actually unrecorded, and that is a reason rather than an excuse. Scripture says God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labor of love, which is a sentence written to people whose work was going unnoticed, and it is the Holy Spirit who searches all things, which means there has been a second record running the whole twenty years.

And here is the difference the second record makes. If nobody is keeping one, you have to. If somebody is, and He was in that hall at eight o'clock every Sunday for two decades, then you can put yours down, and putting it down is not the same as deciding it did not matter.

You have a record kept by somebody who was present for every entry, which is why you are allowed to stop keeping yours. The written word puts the remembering entirely on God's side, and it is His Spirit who bears witness with your spirit rather than leaving a woman to certify her own twenty years.

What I will not tell you about being thanked

Now, plainly.

I am not going to tell you that being thanked does not matter. It does. Human beings need to be seen and a church that only thanks new things is doing something careless, and it would be an entirely reasonable thing to mention to somebody, once, kindly, in a normal voice, and it would probably be received well.

And I am not going to tell you the reward is coming later so it evens out. That reads as a deferred payment and it turns twenty years into an investment, and you have just found out what an account under service does to a person.

And I am not going to tell you that you should have been beyond this by now. Twenty years does not make somebody immune. It usually makes it worse, because the account is bigger.

Both halves. Not being thanked is not the withdrawal of God's favor and it is not a secret spiritual advantage.

You are favored and nobody said your name this morning, and neither of those is evidence about the other. Matthew 20 puts the generosity and the grievance in the same story without ranking the workers, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a person able to hold both without needing the story tidied into a lesson about her character.

The breakthrough

So here is what I want to hand you before the caretaker wants the hall.

The receipt is not a scandal. It is what twenty years of genuinely unseen work does to a person who had nowhere else to put it, and you found it this morning, and finding it is the whole of what was needed.

You are blessed in this hall today, twenty years in, with a stack half done and a name that was not yours said from the front, and blessed means the favor of God is resting on you here. Matthew 20:13 has the householder say I do thee no wrong before anything else, and it is the Holy Spirit who has been keeping the record that makes yours unnecessary.

So take the word. Not the version handed out at anniversaries. His. Say it over the twenty years you have actually had, the eight o'clocks, the flowers on the second Sunday, the four people you told about the ninth chair, the mug somebody left on the window ledge again, and mean by it what the parable means: nothing was taken from me, and what was given to her was His to give.

And then put the receipt down. Not tear it up, which would be a performance. Put it down, and finish the stack.

You have twenty years counted by somebody who was in this hall at eight o'clock for every one of them. Scripture puts the remembering on God's side and calls Him not unrighteous to forget, and His Spirit is the one who has been present for every entry you were making in the dark.

Declare this over yourself

Say this out loud in the hall. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the standing to say what a word means over your own life came with Him and not with being thanked from the front. Scripture is under every line here and the Holy Spirit carries it, not whether the ache has gone. What He does about being seen is His to decide, in His own way and in His own time, and I am not going to promise you an anniversary. Your part is to say it and mean it, and then to finish the stack.

  1. Chairs I have stacked for twenty years, you are furniture and you are not an invoice. Matthew 20 says is thine eye evil because I am good, and the question is about whose it was to give.
  2. Receipt I never decided to keep, get out, in the name of Jesus. It is written that God is not unrighteous to forget the work and labor of love, and He was in this hall at eight o'clock for every entry I made in the dark.
  3. Lord, nothing was taken from me this morning and what You gave her was Yours to give. You have kept the whole record and mine is not needed, and I am blessing Helen out loud and finishing the chairs.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
