The One Who Cut Corners Got the House

It came up on a Tuesday and she was not looking for it.

A house. Gravel at the front, a porch with a light on, and him standing in the doorway with his arms out doing the thing men do in photographs about houses.

She worked with him for two years. She knows what he did about the figures in the second quarter and she knows what he said in the meeting in October and she knows that a woman called Priya took the fall for both and that Priya now works somewhere considerably less good.

She said something at the time. Once, carefully, to the right person, and it went nowhere and she was told, kindly, that it was noted.

That was four years ago.

And she has been fine about it. Genuinely. She moved on and she likes where she is and she does not lie awake about that job.

But she has looked at that photograph eleven times in three days.

And here is what she has finally worked out, walking to the shop this afternoon in the sun with her coat open: it is not the house. She does not want that house. She would not have that house.

It is that she has started, quietly, at the edges, to suspect something about how any of this works. Not to disbelieve. To suspect. And that is a much worse thing to be carrying on a bright afternoon and it does not go away when you tell yourself it is childish.

If you have watched somebody prosper on the back of something you know about, you know that walk. And you know the sentence: I am not asking for him to be punished, I am asking whether anybody is keeping the books at all, and I do not like that I am asking it.

The word, and then the first instruction

Let me walk down to the shop with you and say the plain thing in the sun.

The problem is not the house. You said so yourself on the way past the bins and you were right. The problem is that a photograph has become evidence in a case you did not know you were building, and the case is not against him, it is about whether the whole thing is being run properly, and that is a much bigger draft to be standing in.

So let me put the word straight first.

Blessed does not mean gravel at the front and a porch light. It means the favor of God is resting on a person, His face is turned toward them. It is a fact about where He is looking, and a photograph of a house has never once been able to report on it in either direction, for him or for you.

Now the psalm, and I want you to notice what the first instruction actually is.

Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.Psalm 37:1

Fret not. That is the first thing said, before any argument, before any explanation of how it works out.

And notice that the psalm assumes the situation. It does not say if you ever encounter this. It opens by naming evildoers who are doing well, as a standing feature, and then it deals with the reader's insides first and the theology second.

That order matters enormously. God, in that psalm, goes to the fretting before He goes to the arithmetic, which means the fretting was expected, and it means He is not shocked to find you doing it on the way to the shop.

You are being addressed by a psalm that assumed this situation and named your feeling in its first line. Psalm 37:1 opens on the fretting rather than on an explanation, and it is the Holy Spirit who is able to hand a person a psalm that starts exactly where they are standing rather than where they ought to be.

What the psalm does not do

Now let me be careful, because this psalm gets used badly and you would spot it.

It does not say the wicked are secretly miserable. It does not say the house is not nice. It does not say he does not sleep at night, which is a thing people say and which is usually a comfort invented on the spot.

What it says is that it does not last, and it says it in agricultural language: they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb. That is a statement about duration, not about interior weather.

And it makes a promise about the timescale that is deliberately vague, because the psalmist is old. He says later, in the same psalm: I have been young, and now am old, and I have not seen the righteous forsaken. That is a man reporting on a lifetime of watching, not a man predicting next year.

Which means the psalm is not offering you a settlement date. It is offering you a longer view than the one available from a photograph on a Tuesday.

You have been reading a Tuesday as though it were the accounts, and the psalm is written by a man who watched for a lifetime before he said anything. Psalm 37:25 puts the observation across a whole life rather than a season, and it is the Holy Spirit who gives a person the patience to hold a question open rather than closing it early in either direction.

And here is the thing about Priya, since she is the actual person in this and not him.

You said something. Once, carefully, to the right person, and it went nowhere, and you have discounted that for four years because it did not work.

It counted. It is in the record. Not the company's record, which is worthless, but in the one the psalm is talking about, which is being kept by somebody who was in that room.

You have something on the record that went nowhere at the time, and it was recorded by the one who was actually present. Scripture says God is not unrighteous to forget your work, and it is the Holy Spirit who searches all things, so the conversation that was noted and dropped was not the only account of it.

What I will not promise about him

Now, plainly.

I am not going to tell you it catches up with him. It might. It might not, in your lifetime, in any way you would recognize, and every confident sentence you have ever heard on that subject was somebody managing their own discomfort.

And I am not going to tell you to stop caring about it, because caring about it is not the problem. Wanting things to be right is not envy. If you had not cared you would not have said anything four years ago.

And I am not going to tell you the suspicion is childish. It is not childish. It is the oldest question in the book, it takes up whole psalms and the entirety of one wisdom book, and the fact that you are asking it means you are reading the world accurately and have not yet found the longer view.

Both halves. His house is not evidence of God's favor and your not having it is not evidence of its absence.

You are favored and he has gravel at the front, and neither of those is evidence about the other. Scripture opens Psalm 37 by naming the situation as normal rather than as a scandal, and it is the Holy Spirit who steadies a person inside a question that is not going to be settled this afternoon.
