The Corridor Outside the Room

He is standing about twelve yards down from her door because that is where his legs stopped.

The registrar was decent about it. She used the phrase "not doing what we had hoped" and then she used other words afterwards and he heard about a third of them and he will need to ask again tomorrow, which he knows and has already accepted.

There is a window at the end of this corridor with the late afternoon coming through it and a radiator under the window that is too hot to lean on, which he found out four days ago.

Since March.

Since March he has done it every morning in the parking lot before he comes in. Out loud, because somebody told him out loud matters, and he is not a man who is fussy about how a thing is done as long as it is done. He has said: blessing over my wife. Blessing over this day. And then he has come in and been cheerful in that room for however many hours it took.

And just now, standing here, he tried to say it and his mouth would not do it.

Not because he stopped believing. He would tell you, if you asked him directly, that he believes every word of it. It was more mechanical than that. He opened his mouth in a corridor and nothing came, and he stood there and understood that he could not currently make that sentence.

He is fifty two. They have been married twenty six years.

If you have ever stood outside a room and found the words gone, you know that corridor. And you know the thing that arrives right behind it, which is not doubt about God, it is a much smaller and colder thing: I have been the one carrying this, and I have just found out I cannot.

The word, and then the kind of help

Let me stand at the window end with you and say the plain thing, because it is the thing you would not say to anybody in this building.

It is not the registrar. You will process that tomorrow when you ask again and hear more of it. It is that you have been the strong one since March, and the strength was partly a sentence you could say, and just now the sentence would not come, and the ground under a man goes when that happens.

So let me set the word straight, because the version you have been carrying has been doing a job it was not built for.

Blessed does not mean the treatment works. It means the favor of God is resting on a person, His face is turned toward them. It is about where God is looking, and it is not, and has never been, a statement about what the second line does.

Now the verse, and I want you to look at one word in it.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.Psalm 46:1

Very present. That is a phrase about location. It says: found, right there, close at hand. The psalm does not say a very effective help, and it does not say a help that removes. It says present, and then it says in trouble, which means the trouble is still going on while the help is present.

Read the next verse and it gets sharper. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea. That is not a psalm about things going well. It is a psalm about the ground itself coming apart, written by people who were not being spared.

You have a help that is present in this corridor rather than a help that promised to change the report. Psalm 46:1 says very present help in trouble, and it is the Holy Spirit whom Jesus called the Comforter, the one who comes alongside, which is exactly the kind of help that word describes.

The word that would not come

Now the mouth, because that is the thing that actually frightened you and it deserves to be taken seriously rather than reassured away.

Nothing was withdrawn from you in that corridor. A man who has been holding a room together since March, on his own, out loud, every morning, hit the end of a specific kind of strength at four in the afternoon on a bad day. That is a body and a mind doing exactly what bodies and minds do, and it is not a spiritual event.

And here is the thing about Psalm 46 that nobody says. The most famous line in it is: be still, and know that I am God. And in the Hebrew the sense of it is closer to: stop. Let your hands drop. Cease.

That instruction is given in the middle of the psalm about the mountains going into the sea. It is not a call to serenity. It is a command to stop working, addressed to people in the exact circumstance you are in.

You are permitted to stop for a moment in this corridor, and the permission is written into the psalm as a command rather than a concession. Psalm 46:10 says be still and know, in the middle of the earth coming apart, and it is the Holy Spirit who is called the Comforter precisely because the people He is given to are not able to keep going indefinitely on their own.

So the sentence not coming is not a failure. It is a man's hands dropping for a minute, twelve yards from a door, and the psalm has a line for exactly that and the line is not a rebuke.

You have been carrying something since March that was never meant to be carried by one person alone, and putting it down for four minutes by a radiator is not dropping it. Scripture commands the stillness rather than merely allowing it, and it is His Spirit who is described as helping our weakness, which is a word for taking hold of the other end of a load.

What I will not tell you in this corridor

Now let me be honest, because in about ten minutes you are going to go back through that door and be cheerful, and you deserve not to be lied to first.

I do not know what happens. I do not know about the third line or whether there is one, and I am not going to tell you it turns around, and I am not going to tell you God is about to do something. I would be inventing it, and a man in your position can hear an invented sentence at a distance.

And I am not going to tell you this is happening for a reason, or that God is doing a work in your marriage through it. Twenty six years does not need a diagnosis to deepen it. That is the comfortable ditch and it makes a cruelty into a curriculum.

Both halves. This is not the withdrawal of His favor and it is not His favor in disguise.

You are favored and the news is bad, and both of those are true in this corridor this afternoon. The written word puts God as a present help while the mountains are moving rather than after they settle, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a man able to hold two true things when everything in him wants one.

And if you are not sleeping, or if this has got somewhere darker than tired, say it out loud to somebody who can act. A doctor, your own doctor, not hers. That is not weakness. You are the second patient in this and nobody has told you that.
