The Caption Under Everybody Else's Photo

It is eleven at night and the thumb is doing the thing the thumb does.

A kitchen with an island in it and a bowl of lemons. Somebody's dad in a garden with a hosepipe. A girl she sat next to in year eight in a car with the sea behind her. Four people on a sofa in matching pajamas being deliberately silly, and every single one of them looks like they meant to be there.

And underneath, over and over, in different fonts and different colors and always the same:

blessed.

blessed so blessed grateful and blessed

Downstairs it has started again. Not the loud version. The other one, the one that goes on for hours at a level you can only hear if you already know the shape of it, with the long gaps that are worse than the talking. She has her music on but not loud enough to actually cover it, because covering it means she cannot tell how bad it is getting, and knowing how bad it is getting is a job she took on without anybody asking her to.

She scrolls.

blessed.

She is not stupid. She knows those kitchens have their own eleven o'clock. She has said that to herself so many times that the sentence has gone smooth and stopped working. Because the thing about a word repeated three hundred times under three hundred photographs is that it stops being a caption and becomes a category, and she can see quite clearly which category she is in and which one she is not, and there is not a lot of arguing with it at eleven at night.

If you have ever put the phone face down and felt worse than before you picked it up, this is where she is. And under it there is a sentence she would not say to anybody: that word is for people whose houses are like that, and I live here.

The word was stolen and given a new job

Let me say the honest thing first, because it is the thing underneath and nobody says it.

That word has been quietly repurposed. Somewhere in the last fifteen years it stopped being a word about God and became a way of showing people a nice thing without seeming to boast about it. That is all it does now in a caption. It is a softener. It means: look at this, and please do not think me smug.

Which is fine and human and mostly harmless, right up until somebody at eleven at night reads three hundred of them in a row and works out, without ever deciding to, that the word describes a kind of life. And then it stops being harmless, because she does not have that kind of life, and so the word starts telling her something about herself that God never said.

So let me give you the word back the way the Bible uses it, and I have picked the one that will surprise you, because there is not a kitchen island in it anywhere.

Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man unto whom the Lord imputeth not iniquity.Psalm 32:1-2

Read it again and notice what it is about. It is not about a house. It is not about a holiday or a garden or a family in matching pajamas. It is about a person who did something wrong and is not being counted for it.

That is what David reaches for when he wants to say what a blessed person looks like. Not somebody with a good life. Somebody whose record is covered.

So here is what the word actually means. Blessed is God's favor resting on a person. His face turned toward them, His hand over the worst of them, nothing on the account. It is not a description of a kitchen. You are covered, right now, tonight, in this house, and covered is the exact word Scripture uses for the blessed one. Psalm 32 puts the whole weight of the word on what God has done with the record, and it is the Holy Spirit whom Paul says takes that same psalm and applies it to us, which means it is His job to make a covering feel like a covering.

Two words got the same spelling. One means favored. One means having a nice time. You have been reading the second one three hundred times a night.

The people God calls blessed are not photogenic

Now I want you to look at who actually gets called blessed in the Bible, because it is a strange list and nobody would caption a photo with it.

A man being forgiven for something he had gone to a lot of trouble to hide. That is Psalm 32, and if you read the rest of it he describes months of feeling awful before he came clean.

People who are poor in spirit. People who are mourning. People who are hungry for things to be right and cannot make them right. People who get talked about because of Jesus. That is the list Jesus Himself gives, and there is not one photograph on it.

You are the shape of person the word actually goes on, and you have been reading a version of it invented by a caption. That is exactly who Psalm 32 and the Beatitudes name, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a list a person has excluded herself from and puts her name back into it.

And I want to say clearly what this is not, because you are sixteen and not stupid and you can hear a con coming. This is not me saying that your house is secretly better than theirs. It is not. The shouting downstairs is not a hidden blessing and I am not going to dress it up as one. It is hard and it should not be happening and God is not the author of it.

It is also not me saying those families are faking. Some of them are not. Some of them are exactly as happy as they look, and that is a good thing and not a theft from you.

You have not been left out of anything, and no photograph anywhere took something out of your hands. The written word puts the blessing on the covered rather than the comfortable, and His Spirit is the one who makes that stop being a technicality and start being a floor.

What is actually true about tonight

So here is where you are, factually, at eleven o'clock.

You are in a house where something hard is happening that you did not cause and cannot fix. That is true and I am not going to move you off it. You have been doing a job nobody gave you, which is monitoring how bad it gets, and that job is too heavy for you and it has been for a while.

And at the same time, God is not somewhere else. He is not in those kitchens more than He is in yours. He is not at the sea with the girl from year eight. You have His attention completely, tonight, and it is not divided between you and the ones with better photographs. Scripture says He imputeth not iniquity, which is a covering laid on people one at a time rather than shared out thinly, and it is the Holy Spirit who is called the Comforter and who does not have to leave one room to be in another.

One more thing, and then I will stop teaching. If the shouting downstairs ever stops being shouting, or if you are ever frightened, that is a thing to tell a real adult about, today, out loud. Not to pray about instead. A teacher, an aunt, a doctor, somebody who can act. That is not a lack of faith and it is not disloyalty. It is the right thing and it is what a person who is covered does.
