The coastal path in the early evening and the light doing what it does on the water, and she has been walking it on Tuesdays for about two years.
Five years since the papers.
She did not want it. That is the whole thing and it has never changed and she does not soften it for anybody. She would have stayed. There was a version where she stayed and she has thought about that version more than she would say.
And now here is the list she cannot look at directly.
She walks. She never walked. There was no room for it and no permission and no reason, and now there is a Tuesday and a path and a flask.
She sees her sister every three weeks and they are closer than they have been since they were children, and that is not a small thing, it is one of the two or three largest things in her life.
And there is a shape to her days now that she chose. All of it. Every part of what happens between six in the morning and eleven at night is a thing she decided, and she did not know until about the third year how much that would matter.
And every time she notices one of those, something happens.
It is not guilt exactly. It is nearer to disloyalty. Because if the walking is good then the marriage ending produced something, and if it produced something then somewhere at the back of it there is a sentence about how it was all for the best, and she will not have that sentence anywhere near what happened to her.
If you have caught yourself enjoying a life you did not choose, you know that path. And you know exactly what closes down when you do: I am not allowed to like this, because liking it would mean I was wrong to want the other one.
The word, and then a verb that belongs to Him
Let me walk with you and say the plain thing while the light is still on the water.
The problem is not the walking. The problem is that noticing something good has become an act of betrayal against your own history, and so you have been rationing your own life for about three years without calling it that.
So let me put the word straight first.
Blessed does not mean the life you have now is better. It means the favor of God is resting on a person, His face is turned toward them. It is about where He is looking. It was on you in the marriage and it was on you in the year of the papers and it is on you on this path, and none of that is a comparison between the three.
Now the verse, and I want you to look at whose action it is.
Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness.Psalm 30:11
Thou hast turned. Thou hast put off. Thou hast girded.
Every single verb in that sentence belongs to God. There is not one thing in it that the psalmist does.
Which changes what your Tuesdays are. If the good things in your life were things you had constructed out of the wreckage, then enjoying them would be a kind of endorsement of the wreckage, because you would have built them out of it deliberately.
They are not. Somebody else did the turning. You went for a walk.
You have been given a turned thing rather than having built one, and every verb in that verse belongs to God. Psalm 30:11 puts the turning and the putting off and the girding all in His hands, and it is the Holy Spirit who is the one at work in a life without ever being the author of what broke it.
Turned, and what turning does not require
Now that word, because it is the exact one you need and English carries it well.
Turned. Not: replaced. Not: canceled. Not: explained.
When something is turned, it is still the same object. It has been put in a different position. The psalm does not say God removed the mourning and gave him dancing instead, it says He turned the one into the other, which is a claim about direction and not about substitution.
So the mourning is not gone from that verse. It is in it. It is the raw material of the sentence.
Which means the disloyalty you have been feeling has no object. You have not left your grief behind by walking on Tuesdays. It is in the walking. It is why you walk on your own, and why it is Tuesday, and why there is a flask rather than a cafe.
You have not abandoned anything, because the thing you are afraid of betraying is inside what you are doing. Psalm 30:11 says turned rather than replaced, and it is the Holy Spirit who does that kind of work in a person without ever requiring them to disown what came before.
And notice what that psalm does not do. It does not say the sackcloth was good. It does not say God put the sackcloth on him. Two verses earlier he is asking God what profit there is in his blood, which is about as raw as the psalms get.
It is a psalm with a wrecked man in it, and the wreckage is never justified anywhere in it, and the last thing that happens is that he is girded with gladness by somebody else's hands.
You are being girded rather than asked to dress yourself in something you do not feel. Psalm 30 keeps the raw complaint and the girding in one poem without reconciling them, and His Spirit is the one who does the girding, which means the gladness on a Tuesday is issued rather than manufactured.
The version where you stayed
Now the version where you stayed, because you mentioned it and then moved past it quickly.
You are allowed to have thought about it. You are allowed to think about it on a path in the evening. That is not disloyalty to your current life either, and you have been rationing that one too.
I am not going to tell you it would have been worse. I have no idea. Nobody can run the other version and anybody who says confidently that it would have been terrible is inventing something in order to be comforting.
And I am not going to tell you God ended your marriage to give you Tuesdays. That is the sentence you have been refusing for five years and you have been right to refuse it, and I am not going to slip it in wearing a different coat.
Both halves. It should not have ended and there is a shape to your days that you chose, and neither of those requires the other.
You are favored and it ended, and neither of those is evidence about the other. Psalm 30 puts the sackcloth and the girding in one psalm without one explaining the other, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a person able to hold both on a coastal path without collapsing them into a story.
So here is what I want to hand you before the light goes off the water.
You are not being disloyal. Every verb in that verse belongs to God, which means the good in your life was not built by you out of what happened, and enjoying it endorses nothing.
You are blessed on this path this evening, five years on, with the marriage exactly as ended as it is, and blessed means the favor of God is resting on you here. Psalm 30:11 says thou hast turned, thou hast put off, thou hast girded, all of them His verbs, and it is the Holy Spirit who does that work in a person without being the author of what broke.
So take the word. Not the version that would make the papers into a plan. The psalm's. Say it over the five years you have actually had, the version where you stayed, the Tuesdays, your sister every three weeks, the shape of everything between six and eleven that you chose, and mean by it what the psalm means: I did not want it, and He has turned something, and I did not do the turning.
You have gladness girded on you by somebody else's hands rather than worn because you decided to. Psalm 30:11 puts the girding in His hands and leaves the sackcloth unjustified, and His Spirit is the one doing it on a coastal path on a Tuesday evening.
Declare this over yourself
Say this out loud on the path. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the standing to say what a word means over your own life came with Him and not with how the five years turned out. Scripture is under every line here and the Holy Spirit carries it, not whether the disloyalty has stopped arriving. What He does next is His to decide, in His own way and in His own time, and I am not going to guess it or tell you the other version would have been worse. Your part is to say it and mean it, in two sentences and not one.
- Marriage I did not choose to end, you are a loss with my name on it and you are not something I am supposed to be pleased about. Psalm 30 says thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing, and turned is a word about what He does.
- Disloyalty that arrives every time I notice something good, get out, in the name of Jesus. It is written that He turned rather than replaced, which means the mourning is inside the walking and I have not left it anywhere.
- Lord, every verb in that verse is Yours and I did not build any of this out of the wreckage. You have girded me with gladness on a Tuesday, and I am saying both sentences out loud and letting each one stand at its full size.
